The story
The River Café is an American restaurant at 1 Water St., Brooklyn, New York, set on the waterfront beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Wine Spectator gave it a Best of Award of Excellence in 2022, and the restaurant has been serving its menu since 1977.
Chef Brad Steelman plans the menu around the changing seasons while keeping a classic American menu at its core. The dinner menu has included a foie gras terrine with warm griddled toast batons and spiced maple cider reduction, and a Wagyu steak tartare with quail egg and Cognac gelée. Since opening in June 1977, the kitchen has sourced the freshest ingredients it can find.
Live piano and the view of the skyline shape the dining room, and gentlemen are asked to wear jackets and collared shirts. The wine program is the other draw, with multiple vintages of Domaine de La Romanée-Conti and a Madeira collection the restaurant describes as among the finest in the world.
