The story
Mari is a Korean restaurant at 679 Ninth Ave. in New York City, and it earned one Michelin star in 2026 for high quality cooking. It comes from the team behind Kochi, and its tasting menu is built around hand rolls.
Each hand roll sets the rhythm of the meal. The rice is seasoned with a sesame seed and sesame oil base, and the gim wrapping each roll has a delicate texture. The evening opens with the hansang, a course of amuse-bouche bites, then moves through seasonal rolls and closes with a two-part dessert.
Sungchul Shim grew up cooking for family gatherings in Jeollanam-do and opened Kochi in October 2019 before Mari. The menu moves from egg and caviar with beurre blanc and rice cake to razor clam jjamppong with shrimp jeon and hand-pulled noodles. In between, the courses include fluke, scallop, spicy tuna, branzino and zabuton wagyu. Feridun Fangaj is listed as chef de cuisine.
