The story
Le Coucou is a French restaurant at 138 Lafayette St. in New York City, and it earned one Michelin star in 2026. Chef Daniel Rose runs the kitchen in partnership with restaurateur Stephen Starr, bringing classic French cooking to a dining room that sits between Parisian tradition and the city's own restaurant scene.
Rose reworks traditional French dishes with fresh, seasonal ingredients. The menu keeps its roots in classic technique, and the kitchen can accommodate most dietary requirements, including gluten intolerance. Guests should tell the server about any food allergies.
Tartare de bœuf is hand chopped prime filet with traditional condiments and caviar. Quenelle de brochet, a pike mousse, comes with lobster sauce or beurre blanc. Tout le lapin, the whole rabbit, and filet de bœuf with sauce chateaubriand anchor the main courses. For dessert, the île flottante arrives with candied almonds and Grand Marnier.
The dining room was designed by Roman and Williams and blends classic European ambiance with modern touches. Wine Spectator gave the wine program its Best of Award of Excellence in 2025. The list runs from Champagne and Sancerre to Chablis, and the cocktail menu includes a non-alcoholic selection.
