The story
Casa Mono is a Spanish restaurant at 52 Irving Place in New York City, just east of Union Square, and it holds a Michelin 1 Star (2026) for high quality cooking. The kitchen draws on the Catalan coast of Spain, with small plates built around a plancha grill.
Executive Chef Andy Nusser grew up in the fishing village of Cadaqués on Spain's Costa Brava, and that coastline shapes the menu. He cooks with adventurous proteins such as sweetbreads, cockscombs and pig's feet. Razor Clams a la Plancha has built a loyal following among regulars.
The dining room seats 13 tables and 15 bar seats, with a mosaic tile floor, walls lined with sherry and wine bottles, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto Irving Place. Guests seated at the bar sit directly in front of the grill. Next door, sister restaurant Bar Jamón serves Iberico ham sliced to order. The two restaurants share a wine list of nearly 600 bottles, and Wine Spectator gave the list its Best of Award of Excellence in 2008.
