The story
Supperland, at 1212 The Plaza in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a Southern American kitchen cooking over wood fire in a restored mid-century church in Plaza Midwood. The Michelin Guide lists it as Recommended (2026), and its wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (2022).
Executive Chef Joe Hutton brings 14 years of culinary experience to the kitchen, blending Asian cuisine training with a long appreciation for Southern traditions. The main grill is 14 feet long, and the kitchen cooks over hickory and oak. Upstairs, dishes are cooked without gas or electricity, using vegetables roasted in the coals, branzino seared on the plancha, and steaks finished by embers. Every steak is butchered in-house.
Brunch runs as a buffet on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guests can fill a plate with skewers from the wood-fired grill, hot grits with gravy, and pull-apart cinnamon rolls. An eggs benedict is made to order at the chef's counter, and chilled oysters and shrimp cocktail circulate through the dining room. Prepaid reservations are encouraged, since walk-in space changes from weekend to weekend.
The property spans two old church buildings, with a main dining room that keeps the original windows and center aisle. The Bar at Supperland sits beside a garden, and the Speakeasy is a ten-seat bar in the basement. The Wine Room seats up to 12 people and overlooks the prep kitchen, and the Garden Grove patio hosts parties of up to 40 guests.
