The story
Chez Panisse, a Californian restaurant at 1517 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, earned a Michelin Recommended listing for 2026. The downstairs dining room and upstairs café both draw on the same seasonal, farm-sourced produce.
The downstairs Restaurant serves four courses at $175 per person, before drinks, tax and service. The February 2026 menus included slow-baked steelhead trout with sorrel cream and spit-roasted Root Down Farm duck with gratin dauphinois. Vegetarian substitutions are available, but no other changes. A wine pairing costs $95 on Tuesday through Saturday and $75 on Monday.
Upstairs, the café offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu that changes daily. A February sample listed garganelli with chanterelle mushroom ragù, pan-fried ling cod with radicchio, and a pizza with Yukon Gold potato, leeks and black truffle. Dishes ranged from $14 to $40.
The menus credit specific producers, including Bellwether Farms for its ricotta, Stemple Creek Ranch for its grass-fed beef, and Paine Farm for its squab. Corkage is $40 per bottle or $70 per magnum.
