The story
Killingworth Castle in Woodstock serves modern British food at Glympton Road, Wootton, OX20 1EJ, and holds three AA Rosettes (2026). The 1637 pub sits in the village of Wootton, a short drive from Blenheim Palace.
The menus follow the seasons and draw on wild and organic ingredients from the Cotswolds. The Soil Association has awarded the pub three stars for organic food, and the Michelin Guide has recommended it for nine consecutive years. Jim and Claire Alexander, who bought the building in 2012, oversee the business themselves.
The Good Food Guide describes a meal that might open with a cheese and truffle gougère with parsley emulsion. Smoked trout arrives with a buttermilk and lovage sauce, poured at the table. Guinea fowl breast sits on pearl barley in a chestnut velouté, and dessert can be a dark chocolate délice spiced with Szechuan peppercorns. Guests can also take the tasting menu with matching wines.
The eight ensuite bedrooms were built in the adjoining stable block, and each is individually designed with a giant rustic oak bed. Rooms come with flatscreen TVs, Wi-Fi and English sherry on arrival. Dogs on leads are welcome in the bar and garden, where tables are allocated first come, first served.
