The story
Homestead Kitchen is a modern British restaurant at Prudom House, Goathland, YO22 5AN, in the Whitby area of North Yorkshire. It holds 3 AA Rosettes for 2026. The kitchen cooks with produce from its own gardens and the moors around it.
Chef Peter Neville and his partner Cecily Fearnley founded the restaurant in 2021 inside a restored 18th-century farmhouse. Vegetables, herbs and fruit are grown organically on site by the no-dig method, and the beds sit close enough to the dining room to be seen from it. Meat comes from moorland farmers and fish from Whitby. Menus follow the seasons rather than a fixed list.
The Good Food Guide rates the restaurant Very Good for 2026 and describes cooking that applies modern techniques to sound ingredients. Among its examples are a faggot of veal cheek and calf's liver on truffled soubise cream, and soused red mullet with baby violet artichoke in bouillabaisse. A main course might be Yorkshire wagyu with confit mushrooms, duck liver parfait and a salad of Yorkshire Blue and watercress. Puddings run to caramelised lemon tart with local honey ice cream.
The dining areas are low-ceilinged and done in unshowy country style, with the North York Moors spread out beyond the windows. It feels like a family home that happens to serve very good British food. An elderflower and English fizz cocktail suits the setting. Those who want to stay longer can book the self-contained holiday cottage on the property.
