The story
The Lake Isle serves modern British cooking at 16 High Street East in Uppingham, Rutland, and holds 2 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence (2026). The restaurant sits in a Grade II listed building on the town's High Street, and guests can combine dinner with an overnight stay.
Stuart Mead has led the kitchen for more than two decades. The cooking mixes influences from further afield, so a grilled sea bass might arrive with samphire pakora, toasted cucumber, mussels and sorrel raita. The set lunch changes every month, with a new menu on the first Tuesday.
Crispy panko scallops come with chorizo, and pork fillet is served with a wild boar pie. Desserts lean comforting, such as a salted caramel custard tart with apple and Calvados. The Good Food Guide lists the restaurant as Good for 2026, and the wine list runs to around 200 bottles.
