The story

North Street Kitchen, Fowey: Seafood Sharing Plates by the Estuary

North Street Kitchen in Fowey is a seafood restaurant at 55 North Street, PL23 1DB, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026 for good quality, good value cooking. The sharing plates menu is served in a converted boatshed on the Fowey estuary, in Cornwall.

Cooking and sourcing

Ethan and Hazel Friskney-Bryer took over the restaurant in February 2024 and kept its relaxed character. Most of the fish is caught by chef Jordan Davies, just a few miles away. The Good Food Guide, which lists the restaurant as Very Good for 2026, highlights the couple's commitment to seasonality and sustainability.

On the plate

The menu changes daily and is written on a simple blackboard. Each week the kitchen makes a fish soup from trimmings that cannot be used elsewhere. Other seafood dishes have included cured pollack with fermented chilli dressing and confit sea bass with Cornish earlies, mayo and lovage. Away from the sea, the kitchen has served slow-cooked lamb bolognese and nettle gnudi with mushrooms. The chocolate mousse with caramel and salt is one the Good Food Guide finds hard to resist.

The room and drinks

The dining room has a long communal table, festoon lights and an open kitchen, with views over the comings and goings of small craft on the creek. Staff are well informed about local produce. Natural wines are poured by the glass, and there is grape juice from the Tamar Valley for those who prefer something without alcohol.

The Good Food Guide — Very Good

The Friskney-Bryers have created ‘a Fowey institution’ in their converted boatshed restaurant overlooking the comings and goings of small craft out on the creek. The couple are fully committed to seasonality and sustainability, and their staff are also impressively clued-up when it comes to all things local. An infectiously informal vibe prevails in the main dining room with its long communal table, festoon lights, open kitchen and simple blackboard menu. Each week, the kitchen has a fish soup on the go, made from trimmings that can’t be used elsewhere; otherwise, the roll call of fabulous seafood specialities, might take in anything from cured pollack with fermented chilli dressing or confit sea bass with Cornish ‘earlies’, mayo and lovage to salt fish gratin. Away from the sea, you might also find slow-cooked lamb bolognese or nettle gnudi with mushrooms, and it's hard to resist the chocolate mousse with caramel and salt. To drink, a handful of natural wines by the glass do the trick – or you might fancy some grape juice from the Tamar Valley.
