The story
Food Leigh-on-Sea, at 92 Leigh Road in Leigh-on-Sea, Southend-on-Sea, is a modern British restaurant that built its menus around organic and seasonal produce. The Good Food Guide rated it Good in 2026, praising food that is "original, packed full of flavour, presented with care."
Chef patron Liam Lingwood leads the kitchen, with Jemma Cooper as co-owner. The restaurant works with small-scale UK producers who farm organically or regeneratively, and it describes its cooking as waste-conscious, with whole-animal butchery and preservation. The approach is set out as a fine dining philosophy, but the menus stay practical and warm.
The lunch menu has delivered memorable dishes. A mushroom and truffle arancino stands out among the snacks, and chalkstream trout tartare comes with ponzu, kohlrabi, lime, radish and herb aioli. Deersbrook Farm pork is served as loin with home-cured bacon, slow-cooked shoulder and white pudding, with devilled sauce and apple purée. Strawberries with meringue and lemon sorbet close the meal.
The dining room has exposed brick, subtle lighting and muted colours, and it fills with local regulars. Weekday and Saturday lunch offers a menu du jour at £30 for two courses or £38 for three, and the evening tasting menu is £69 per person. Sunday brings a seasonal roast at £45. Wines come from Vino Vero, with glasses from £8.50. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended in 2026, and gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan menus are always available.
