The story
Bottega Caruso, at 2-4 Broad Street in Margate, cooks southern Italian food from the family recipes of co-owner Simona Di Dio, and The Good Food Guide 2026 rates it Very Good.
Simona and her partner Harry Ryder started in a Margate food market in March 2017 and moved to their own space on Broad Street in January 2018. The Italian kitchen draws on Simona's home village of Foglianise in Campania. Some produce is imported from family there, and the rest comes from local suppliers. Pasta is made fresh each morning from Italian semolina and organic flour from Nonington Farm in Canterbury.
The menu changes daily, but two humble dishes are fixtures: verdura e fagioli, Simona's grandmother Carmela's greens and beans, and polpette di pane al sugo, sourdough bread balls cooked in tomato sauce. A recent sample menu listed ditalini with mussels, potatoes and saffron, and pappardelle with fennel sausage and squash ragu. Dessert might be tiramisù made with espresso and rum. Smaller plates and nibbles make it easy to graze rather than order three courses.
The wine list is mostly organic, biodynamic and natural, and staff will guide anyone new to low-intervention bottles. The dining room is small, with a few tables outside for walk-ups. Cantina Caruso, the family's wine bar and deli on the same street, sells fresh pasta, olive oil and wines to take home. The Michelin Guide lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.
