The story
Orwells is a Modern British restaurant at Shiplake Row, Binfield Heath, near Reading, and it holds 4 AA Rosettes for culinary excellence in 2026. The white-fronted building is a former pub in an Oxfordshire village close to Henley.
Liam and Ryan Simpson-Trotman run the house, and the Good Food Guide (rated Very Good in 2026) credits their hospitality for the good cheer in the room. Ryan is back in the kitchen after a stint front of house. Produce arrives from the Orkney Islands to Helston in Cornwall, with extra picking from Orwells' own garden and local hedgerows.
The à la carte lists crispy veal sweetbreads with sea leeks, sesame, Ibérico lardo and tamarind. Among the mains is Cornish day boat turbot with verjus sauce, sea beet and salt-baked celeriac. A vegetarian main pairs Shiplake crown prince squash with cobnuts, hen of the woods and truffled goat's curd. Dessert might be Yorkshire rhubarb with cardamom panna cotta, pistachio and ginger. There is also an eight-course tasting menu, and a Sunday roast.
The wine list is a serious one, with plenty of choice by the glass for those who would rather not commit to a bottle. Cocktails, bottled beers and speciality gins sit alongside it.
