The story
Loch Bay is a seafood restaurant listed under Portree, at 1-2 Macleod's Terrace in Stein on the Isle of Skye. It holds three AA Rosettes (2026) for a tasting menu built around what local boats and divers bring in.
Michael and Laurence Smith own the restaurant, and Michael previously cooked at Three Chimneys in Colbost. The Good Food Guide (Very Good, 2026) describes the multi-course "Skye Fruits de Mer" as contemporary Scottish with a French twist. Highland heritage meets Laurence's French influence, and the stocks follow classical French method.
A freshly baked French baton with smoked Crowdie can start the evening, followed by a crunchy oatmeal-coated oyster mignonette. Twice-dived Sconser scallops are moved once to richer feeding waters, then lifted again for service. They might come with chanterelles and sauce vierge. The pot-au-feu brings butter-grilled langoustines, prawns and braised vegetables, with potato curls hidden at the bottom. Mussels come from ropes offshore.
The whitewashed cottage terrace sits on the water, and the building dates to around 1790. With only six tables, the dining room feels informal and personal, and the wine list leans French. Loch Bay will close after its final service on 31 October 2026.
