The story
The Clarence Tavern is a Modern British gastropub at 102 Stoke Newington Church Street in London, listed as Recommended by the Michelin Guide in 2026. It is a sibling of the Canton Arms and The Anchor & Hope.
The Good Food Guide (rated Good, 2026) praises the stripped-back approach: concise cooking that puts the ingredients first. Its reviewer singled out chicken livers on sourdough toast, lifted by wild garlic, and braised rabbit served on the bone over saffron potatoes. Homemade cavatelli with a ramsons sauce and pecorino also earned a mention.
The menu changes with each service. Recent lunches have run from ricotta gnudi with courgettes and mint to roast plaice with mussels and sauce vierge, plus a pork chop with borlotti beans and salsa verde. Larger groups can share a chicken, leek and bacon pie or slow-cooked lamb with gratin dauphinois. A midweek set lunch is offered Tuesday to Friday. Puddings include burnt Basque cheesecake and chocolate mousse with cherries.
Beer and seasonal cocktails sit alongside a natural wine list that leans towards France and Italy. The Good Food Guide notes a dozen or so wines by the glass and a similar number of magnums. A glass of Labet Macvin with a fennel biscuit makes a short, sweet finish. There is also a wine shop on site.
