The story

Teal by Sally Abé, Hackney, London: British Bistro Rated Very Good in 2026

Teal by Sally Abé, at 52 Wilton Way in Hackney, London, is a British bistro whose English menu earned a Very Good rating in the 2026 Good Food Guide. The kitchen turns out gently modernised British cooking, with plates that change with the seasons.

Cooking style

Chef Sally Abé describes her approach as bold flavours on classic foundations, with dishes that feel familiar but sharper and lighter. The menu follows the seasons and the best British produce available. She cooks the food she wants to eat herself, aiming for something honest, generous and deeply satisfying.

Dishes and drinks

Recent plates include devilled crab tartlet, corn-fed chicken breast with spring vegetables and raspberry marshmallow teacake, and the Good Food Guide singled out the pastry and sauces. Signature dishes from Abé's earlier cooking also return, including a Dorset crab royale and a marmalade ice cream sandwich. Penny lick ice cream sells for £1, with proceeds donated to Hackney Food Bank.

The Good Food Guide — Very Good

Nestled in leafy London Fields, Sally Abé’s latest venture is in a part of Hackney where house prices crossed the £1m mark a long time ago. It makes sense to open here (Ornella, a few doors down had the same idea). Abé has taken over what was previously Sesta (and before that Pidgin) converting the spartan space into something more cosseting – a cosy neighbourhood bistro on a model village scale. Pretty lamps, patterned fabrics, trailing plants and treasured cookbooks give it the feel of a beloved country house. The chef and her team can be spied through the hatch, turning out a carte of gently modernised English dishes such as chilled pea and mint soup, devilled crab tartlet, corn-fed chicken breast with spring vegetables, and raspberry marshmallow teacake. Pastry and sauces are particularly accomplished. If they can find a little more cellar space to flesh out the wine list (only two under £50), Teal could really spread its wings.
