The story
Manteca is a modern Italian restaurant at 49-51 Curtain Road in London, and it holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, recognising good quality cooking at good value. The kitchen works with whole-animal butchery, hand-rolled pasta and wood-fired breads, with an Italian-inspired menu built for sharing.
The butchery starts with whole animals. The meat comes from Taste Tradition, a family-run supplier in the North York Moors that sends whole cows, native breed pigs and goats. Those cuts end up as salumi, ragù, grilled beef and meatballs. Downstairs, refrigerated cabinets hold the house-cured charcuterie from the in-house salumeria. Pasta is rolled by hand, and fazzoletti with duck-fat pangrattato is one of the dishes that shows the approach.
Crudo of line-caught sea bass comes with green strawberries, a seasonal dish in the Good Food Guide's recent visit. Duck liver parfait arrives with black date jam and chargrilled bread. Mains come from the wood-fired oven, with John Dory, plaice or longhorn beef among the cuts. The meal ends with almond cake, served with stone fruit and vanilla gelato.
The cocktail list leans on amari, and the wine list focuses on low-intervention bottles from Italy and beyond. Manteca's own white, volume one, is a blend of grillo and catarratto made in Sicily with the Valdibella cooperative, limited to 1,000 litres. Italian wines on tap start at £5.50 a glass, which the Good Food Guide, rating the restaurant Very Good for 2026, counts in its favour.
