The story
Kolae is a Thai grill at 6 Park Street in Borough Market, London, and a 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking. It is the Borough Market offshoot of Som Saa in Spitalfields.
The name refers to kolae (sometimes spelled gaw lae), meat and fish threaded onto bamboo skewers, dipped in spicy, coconutty curry marinades and grilled over an open fire. The Good Food Guide rated the restaurant Very Good in 2026. Its inspectors picked out the signature chicken bamboo and a neat row of soft, juicy mussels. Crispy prawn heads with turmeric and garlic make a sharp opener.
Most dishes rest on British produce. Middle White pork belly and ribs come in dark soy sauce, deeply savoury. A yellow curry combines stone bass, prawns, chopped kale and betel leaf. The menu offers one dessert, pandan sticky rice with coconut sorbet, peanuts, jackfruit and slivers of young coconut.
The restaurant spreads over three levels. The ground floor has an industrial look, with concrete flooring, bare brick walls and exposed ventilation. The bar runs toward the open kitchen, and much of the seating is at the counter. Drinks lean toward spice-friendly wines, tropical cocktails and offbeat beers, among them Jiddler's Tipple, a hazy apricot beer.
