The story
Cloth sits at 44 Cloth Fair in the City of London, a modern British restaurant that earned a Good Food Guide "Good" rating for 2026. It occupies the ground floor of a Grade II-listed Georgian house near the old Smithfield meat market, and it was founded by wine importers Joe Haynes and Ben Butterworth.
Tom Hurst leads the kitchen, arriving from Lasdun, and his cooking follows the seasons. Game appears when it is at its best, and a handmade pasta changes with whatever is ready. The restaurant also holds a Michelin Recommended listing for 2026, which reflects a produce-led modern British kitchen.
The menu is a single sheet with four small plates and four larger ones, framed by snacks and sides. It works as a three-course meal or as a looser mix of plates. The Good Food Guide picks out the chunky chips, a beetroot, goat's curd and fig tart, and roasted Cornish cod set in braised cuttlefish with creamy coco beans. When there is no tart, the rum baba is the dessert to order.
The cellar holds 400 to 600 bottles at any one time, and the list is dominated by European producers. German classics run deep, reflecting Haynes's Riesling specialism, alongside off-piste bottles, new-wave discoveries and a changing by-the-glass selection. The sub-£30 set lunch is good value, and bar snacks are served through the afternoon, though the restaurant closes at weekends.
