The story
40 Maltby Street is a Modern British restaurant in London, set inside the Gergovie Wines warehouse at 40 Maltby Street, Bermondsey, SE1 3PA. The Good Food Guide rated it Very Good in 2026, praising a small open kitchen that turns out far better food than the railway-arch setting suggests.
Around 12 dishes go up on a chalkboard each day, and the menu changes often. A terrine and a seasonal vegetable salad usually appear alongside heartier meat dishes. Raw mackerel with pickled forced rhubarb and horseradish has won repeat orders from guests. A chicken and bacon terrine, with hazelnuts folded through the pork fat for crunch, is another standout. Larger plates might be confit duck with bitter leaves and potato cake, or crumbed skate with Jerusalem artichokes and pickled chanterelles. Desserts always include a sorbet or ice cream.
Raef Hodgson and Harry Lester opened the place in 2011, and the list still comes from Hodgson's sourcing of small-scale, low-intervention producers. Prices are friendly. The by-the-glass selection changes daily, and staff know it well. A spot at the bar is a sensible way to wait for a table.
Exposed brick, long high tables and an open-plan kitchen give the room its easy, slightly rough-edged feel. There are no reservations, so it runs first come, first served. Come with a small group and order widely. In 2026 the National Restaurant Awards placed it at 72.
