The story
The George at Burpham is a Modern British gastropub on The Main Street in Burpham, West Sussex (BN18 9RR), listed under Littlehampton. It holds an AA Rosette for culinary excellence in 2026, and its kitchen adds fusion touches to pub classics.
The building dates from the 18th century and is Grade II listed. The community rescued it and still owns it, and Martin and Charlotte Bull run it. Inside, hops hang from exposed beams and wood-burners warm the room. Dogs are welcome. The Good Food Guide named it a Local Gem for 2026, and walkers drop in from the South Downs, about an hour's hike from the South Downs Way.
The à la carte takes Sussex produce in a international direction. Recent starters included chargrilled octopus with smashed cannellini, chorizo and pistachio, and a lamb merguez scotch egg with preserved lemon yogurt. Mains ranged from South coast dressed crab to char sui Goodwood organic pork belly with watermelon and cashew. The kitchen aims to buy most of its produce within 20 miles. Puddings include a cereal milk soft serve with corn flake crunch.
The wine list comes from Les Caves de Pyrene, with bottles marked as sustainable, organic, biodynamic or vegan. Sussex is represented by a Stopham Estate Bacchus, poured by the glass. The bar also pours local ales.
