The story
Gilpin Spice in Kendal serves Asian fusion from an open kitchen at Crook Road, Bowness-on-Windermere, LA23 3NE. It holds 2 AA Rosettes for 2026.
The menu follows the spice route through the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and China. Head Chef Ralph Rojas and his team change it seasonally. Small plates, large plates, sushi and sharers make it easy to order a little of everything. The kitchen also points out that spice is not the same as heat, so there are options for every palate. Michelin lists the restaurant as Recommended for 2026.
The interior is colourful and contemporary, designed to match the energy of the food. Guests can sit at the chefs' counter to watch the kitchen, take a regular table, or book the private dining room, named India, which seats up to 16 from set menus.
The drinks list pairs Asian-inspired cocktails with beers and wines, and adds a few Lake District favourites.
