The story
The White Horse in Hunstanton is a Modern British pub and seafood restaurant at Main Road, Brancaster Staithe, Norfolk PE31 8BY. It holds 2 AA Rosettes for 2026 and faces out over tidal marshland.
Chef Fran Hartshorne cooks a seafood-led menu with a strong sense of place. Mussels, oysters (served classically or as tempura) and dressed Cromer crab share the list with smoked salmon from the Staithe Smokehouse on the premises. The restaurant says its oysters and Brancaster mussels are grown and harvested in the tidal creeks of Brancaster Bay, when in season. Pan-seared sea trout arrives with leeks, cockles, clams and brown shrimps. Marsh-grazed sirloin with Café de Paris butter is one of the few meat dishes.
A rustic public bar spills onto a front courtyard when the sun shines. The light-filled conservatory dining room and terrace look onto big skies, tidal creeks and little boats. In summer, Marshside works as a casual alfresco corner for cocktails, wine or beer with small plates such as a robata-grilled scallop or a devilled mussel crumpet. The Good Food Guide rates the White Horse "Good" for 2026, and calls its balance of pub and restaurant impressive.
The signature dessert is a lemon tart with blueberries, Dann's Farm yoghurt sorbet and poppyseed crumb. The international wine list is well targeted and offers plenty by the glass in both dining areas.
