The story
The Star Inn, High Street, Harome, near Helmsley, serves modern British cooking in a 14th-century thatched inn and holds one Michelin star (2026). Andrew Pern has been chef-patron since 1996, and Stephen Smith leads the kitchen.
The menus change with the seasons and draw on moorland game, Swaledale lamb and Whitby lobster. The signature starter, "rich man, poor man," pairs pan-fried foie gras with grilled black pudding. A 10-course tasting menu runs alongside the carte.
A fire in November 2021 severely damaged the inn, which reopened about a year later. Its beamed rooms still hold Mouseman furniture by Robert "Mousey" Thompson, and some original pieces were rescued and restored by his craftsmen in Kilburn. Private dining for 8 to 12 people is available in the restaurant.
