The story
The Kirkstyle Inn and Sportsman's Rest, at Slaggyford (CA8 7PB) near Haltwhistle in Northumberland, serves a modern British menu built on local produce and holds the AA's 3 Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence (2026).
Pasture-raised sheep and cattle, along with seasonal game and fish from across Northumberland, anchor the menus that Connor Wilson writes. The plates are immaculately presented, yet the cooking stays straightforward, so the ingredients do most of the talking. Diners might begin with a scallop served with mushroom and spelt ragoût and hollandaise, then move on to pork collar with crispy jowl, carrot and fermented hispi.
The Good Food Guide rates the inn Good for 2026, and guests have singled out a pigeon pie starter in cherry gravy and a Darling Blue panna cotta with plums and walnuts. Sunday roasts draw a steady crowd, and madeleine with blackberries and woodruff offers an offbeat finish. The wine list leans on French classics, with bottles from Brazil, Germany, Switzerland and Uruguay alongside them.
Open moorland surrounds the building, close to the Cumbrian border. It served as the local rectory for centuries before becoming a watering hole in the 19th century. Locals treat it as a community hub, and the venue hosts live music, outdoor seating and a private room for groups.
