The story
The Butchers Arms in Gloucester serves modern British food from a 16th century pub on Lime Street, Eldersfield, GL19 4NX, and holds 2 AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence (2026).
Mark Block runs the kitchen, and the menu changes with the seasons. The pub uses a short list of trusted suppliers, which shows in dishes like the salt cod Scotch egg with chorizo and romesco, or the potted Cornish crab with brown shrimps and pickled cucumber.
The Good Food Guide, which rated the pub Good in 2026, described a squid salad with shaved raw fennel and Cornish cod served with broad beans and basil pesto. Desserts have included a chocolate delice with salted caramel ice cream and honeycomb, and a buttermilk panna cotta with Yorkshire rhubarb.
The bar is the centre of the pub, with open fires, low ceilings and real ale served straight from the cask. Ciders sit alongside a short wine list, with bottles from £25.
Dogs are welcome in the garden but not in the restaurant. Children over nine are welcome, though there is no separate children's menu.
