The story
Timberyard is a modern British restaurant at 10 Lady Lawson Street in Edinburgh, and it holds one Michelin star (2026). The family-run kitchen builds its menus around what local growers, foragers and artisan producers bring in.
The restaurant opened in 2012 under Andrew and Lisa Radford and is now led by the next generation, Ben, Jo and Abi Radford. Head chef Bart Stratfold previously cooked at Coombeshead Farm and Adam Byatt's Bistro Union. Only wild meat is served, including deer, game birds, wild boar, hare and rabbit, alongside ethically sourced fish and shellfish. A vegetarian and vegan menu follows the same seasonal logic.
The building dates from 1895 and has housed a theatre props store, a department store warehouse and a timber yard. Guests walk in through a fire-red barn door into a pared-back room of exposed stone, timber beams and weathered brick. The wine list runs to around 30 pages of natural and unusual bottles, and matched drinks flights are available. One critic found the mark-ups steep, so it helps to ask the sommelier about the unlisted wines by the glass.
