The story
The Little Chartroom, at 14 Bonnington Road in Leith, Edinburgh, serves modern British cooking, and The Good Food Guide rated it Very Good for 2026. The restaurant moved to larger premises after its early popularity, and the menu still keeps a tight focus on Scottish produce.
Roberta Hall and head chef Dominic Greechan lead the kitchen, which works from a concise menu with a nose-to-tail approach. Hall is also the author of The Changing Tides, a cookbook by Roberta Hall-McCarron that arranges recipes by season around game, seafood and wild mushrooms. Its hyper-seasonal thinking is easy to recognise on the restaurant plates.
A duck salad starter pairs a rosy, slightly gamey breast with bittersweet castelfranco leaves, while orange-bright rillettes add depth. The cod fillet arrives with crisp skin and shrimp butter, alongside a small bowl of mash topped with brittle, saline seaweed. Desserts have included a rhubarb trifle and a hot cross bun spread with Hebridean Blue cheese, served with a glass of Portuguese tawny port.
The dining room has a bright, Scandinavian feel, with nautical blues, cool whites and an open kitchen that throws warm light across the tables. Shaun McCarron runs front of house, and his team is precise without being stiff. On Saturday nights, a table can take around two months to secure, so booking well ahead is wise.
