The story
Updown, on Updown Road in Betteshanger near Deal, is a restaurant with rooms in a 17th-century Kent farmhouse. Its Italian kitchen placed 74 in the National Restaurant Awards 2026.
Everything comes off the fire in the open kitchen, and the menu stays short to keep quality up. Starters might be a plate of pasta or veal carpaccio. Mains have included roast squab pigeon with peas and lardo, or grilled leeks with pepperonata and polenta. A larger daily-changing dish is there for sharing.
The Good Food Guide 2026 rates Updown "Good" and mentions chicken liver pâté with agrodolce onions, and a shared T-bone with béarnaise. It also notes turbot with white asparagus, and a bread and butter pudding with a blowtorched crust. Sunday roasts arrive with sharing dishes of vegetables and a jug of gravy. The wine list leans Italian, opening with a Sicilian red and white.
Ruth Leigh and Oliver Brown converted the grade II listed building over several years. The dining room is a converted conservatory across the lawn from the main house, and the grounds cover seven and a half acres. A kitchen garden is open to guests, who can take a drink among the beds. Ten bedrooms are spread across the house, the Stables and two cottages.
