The story
Galvin Green Man is a modern British restaurant and pub at Main Road, Howe Street, near Chelmsford, Essex. The kitchen holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2026, recognising good-quality, good-value cooking.
The menu changes with the seasons and draws on local and sustainable suppliers. Diners can order traditional pub dishes such as fish and chips and a hearty pie, or the Bib Gourmand menu in the dining room. The Sunday roast is a regular fixture. In game season, Great Waltham partridge has appeared on the menu with beetroot and pickled blackberries.
The building dates to 1341, and the beer garden has the River Chelmer running through it. Five private rooms seat between 8 and 16 guests, and the outdoor terrace suits warmer evenings. The pub is dog friendly, and a rotating local brewery offering sits alongside the wine list.
