Y Polyn

A family-run converted tollhouse at Capel Dewi near Carmarthen, with two AA Rosettes for 2026 and a daily-changing menu of Welsh produce with a European accent.

The story

Y Polyn, Carmarthen: Modern European Cooking in the Towy Valley

Y Polyn is a family-owned restaurant at Capel Dewi, SA32 7LH, serving British and modern European food near Carmarthen. It holds two AA Rosettes for 2026.

Seasonal Welsh cooking

The menu changes every day, and almost everything is made on the premises. Saltmarsh lamb, Welsh beef and free-range rare breed pork are the highlights. A Provençal-style fish soup is a fixture. Other dishes have included a ragù of Richard Vaughan's Middle White pork sausage, and confit chicken legs with duck-fat potato and slow-cooked tomato. The owners say plainly that foams and gels have no place on the plate.

A relaxed room

The restaurant occupies a converted tollhouse in the Towy Valley. Tables are mismatched bare wood, tablecloths are banished, and staff wear jeans. Guests pour their own wine, and the house bread and bottled water come at no extra charge. The Good Food Guide's 2026 entry mentions a Sunday lunchtime car park full of local Range Rovers, and the room can get loud with the sound of people enjoying themselves.

Puddings and wine

Desserts lean comforting, such as yoghurt and cream panna cotta with berry compôte and almond crumb. The short wine list offers nearly every bottle in three glass sizes. There is outdoor seating and parking on site.

A car park full of 'rustic Range Rovers' on Sunday lunchtime tells you how much the locals have taken this converted tollhouse in the Towy Valley to their hearts over the years – no doubt, partly explained by the owners’ stated declaration that 'you won't find foams, gels or technical wizardry on the plate'. What you will find is staff with ‘big smiles on their faces’ and a rolling menu loaded with seasonal Welsh produce (often given a European spin) – including 'sensational, traditionally caught sewin' (if you're very lucky). Provençal-style fish soup is a fixture, or you could ring the changes with a ragù of Richard Vaughan’s Middle White pork sausage or chive and garlic polenta with roast Mediterranean vegetables. Chargrilled steaks of Welsh black beef are hugely satisfying, while confit chicken legs arrive with duck-fat potato and slow-cooked tomato. Finish with a luscious Eton mess/knickerbockery glory crossover or yoghurt and cream panna cotta with berry compôte and almond crumb. A short wine selection offers nearly everything in three glass sizes, all at 'accessible price points'.
