The story
Opheem sits at 48 Summer Row in Birmingham, where chef Aktar Islam runs a contemporary Indian kitchen that holds two Michelin stars for excellent cooking (2026). The menu is built on Indian recipes reworked with British seasonal produce, and the multi-course tasting menus are the main draw.
Islam is Birmingham-born and largely self-trained, and he has cooked at Opheem since 2018. He describes himself as a Brummie rather than an Indian chef. His research into the cuisine shapes progressive dishes that use modern European techniques rarely seen in other Indian kitchens. The open kitchen adds a sense of theatre to the dining room.
The signature achaari pink fir potatoes with tamarind are water bathed, grilled, given an espuma and fried three ways, as crisps, pillows and croutons. Tandoori sand carrot arrives with mini lentil pakoras, mint and coriander. Hogget loin comes with its slow-cooked shoulder, finished with a gentle lingering heat. Dessert might be a pistachio-crumbed madeleine or an After Eight style chocolate finale with pine ice cream and mint compote.
