The story
Landrace Bakery at 59 Walcot Street in Bath is a sourdough bakery and café with a European small-plates restaurant upstairs, rated Very Good in The Good Food Guide 2026. The grain is milled by the team themselves, and it shows in everything from the loaves to the pasta course.
Andrew Lowkes opened Landrace in central Bath in 2018. The sourdough uses speciality grains bought directly from local farmers and ground at the bakery's own granite stone mill near Evercreech, about 20 miles south. The Guide also named it a Local Gem for 2026. Cardamom buns and fennel-studded sausage rolls tend to leave with customers who only came for bread. The ground-floor café serves coffee on a walk-in basis, and a pizzeria runs on the same site in the evenings.
Chef Rob Sachdev cooks an Italian-leaning menu built around local sourcing, meant for sharing. The menu changes daily, but the Guide mentions duck mortadella and pot-caught octopus with tomato and bread salad. Pasta might be fettuccine with ragù di cortile. Gotheleny pork comes with broad beans, cooked à la plancha. Dessert draws on the bakery's pastry skills, as in a pistachio and mascarpone mille-feuille.
Guests reach the dining room by a staircase, through the food prep area. Stone walls carry framed posters, high shelves hold rows of empty wine bottles, and the wooden floors are pleasantly scruffy. The wine list leans toward natural and biodynamic bottles, a good prompt to try something unfamiliar.
