Celebrated table

Hillenberg

Modern cuisine from Niklas Ekstedt's Hillenberg in Stockholm, rated Fine level by the White Guide 2026, with a classic brasserie menu, a wine room and a chambre séparée.

The story

Hillenberg, Stockholm: Modern Cuisine on Humlegårdsgatan

Hillenberg serves modern cuisine at Humlegårdsgatan 14 in Stockholm, and the White Guide rated it Fine level in 2026. Niklas Ekstedt has run the restaurant since the start of 2018.

The menu

The kitchen lets southern European cooking meet Scandinavian influences. The list reads like a classic Swedish brasserie, with Skagen, Janzon and Rossini all present. A hearty falafel salad is vegan. The small seafood soup is poured at the table over a fine, brisk broth.

On the plate

Salmon arrives with dill-stewed potatoes, and the bread basket holds crisp, coarse wheat crispbread. Apple tarte flambée closes the meal, crumbly and strikingly pretty. The White Guide reads that as the kitchen's strong aesthetic streak.

Room and wine

The large dining room is unchanged. The left-hand bar has moved from cocktails toward wine glasses, and there is now a wine room and a half-darkened chambre séparée. The list is broad, and the staff will match bottles to what is on your plate. In summer the wall opens onto the street. Michelin lists Hillenberg as Recommended for 2026.

History

On the record

2026
White Guide — Fine level

Only a single grill‑coal blast from the mother ship Ekstedt opened Niklas’s natural‑wine bar Tyge & Sessil in 2016, and in 2018 he further strengthened his foothold in the Skvalberget block by taking over Hillenberg. The cocktail‑heavy vibe of the left‑hand bar has given way to classic wine‑glass clinking; there is now also a wine room and a sleek, half‑darkened chambre séparée, but the large, monolithic dining room remains the same. The menu lists Skagen, Janzon, Rossini – essentially the whole lineup of classic Swedish brasserie dishes. It also includes a few strong, far‑reaching items. The hearty falafel salad is even vegan. The small seafood soup is poured at the table and has a fine, brisk broth. While a crumbly apple‑tarte flambée—how irresistibly beautiful it is (the kitchen has a distinctly strong aesthetic streak)—takes a bite after the salmon with dill‑stewed potatoes—especially since the bread basket has already been lined with its crisp, coarse wheat crispbread. In summer the wall opens onto the street, not a bad thing on a stretch where the “spanning factor” is as high as the back‑slip is greasy.
