The story
Katrinelund Sjökrog in Odensbacken serves Swedish cooking at Katrinelund 470, 715 92 Stora Mellösa, on the southern shore of Lake Hjälmaren. The White Guide placed it at its Very fine level in 2026, and the lakeside kitchen is the reason the restaurant stands out in the area.
The menu is built on Swedish produce, and the kitchen names its sources. The gudgeon comes from Lake Hjälmaren, and the fishermen who caught it are credited by name. Meat and vegetables arrive from farms close by. The pike-perch, known locally as Hjälmargös, appears in a fish and chips that the summer menu has kept coming back to.
Two amuse-bouches open the meal: smoked lamb heart wrapped in pak choi on a stone, then a duck mousse topped with confit duck in a small wooden cup. The main courses are carried to the table by the chefs themselves, who explain each dish and where its ingredients were grown or caught. The dining room is dark, but its large windows keep it bright, and the view over the water is part of the meal.
