The story
Hotell Borgholm is a modern Swedish restaurant inside a hotel at Trädgårdsgatan 15-19 in Borgholm, on the island of Öland. The White Guide gave it a Very fine level rating in 2026, and the kitchen builds its menus around local, seasonal produce.
Christofer Johansson, the hotel's managing director and creative lead, carries on the house's gastronomic tradition. He previously worked at Krakas Krog on Gotland. The hotel's own garden grows close to 100 herbs and seasonings, and they show up across the menus. Dishes change with the seasons and draw on the Öland landscape, combining Swedish tradition with newer touches.
Meals are served in Matsalen, the dining room the restaurant calls the heart of the hotel. Guests can also settle into Bar & Vardagsrum, or visit Vinkällaren, the wine cellar. The wine list is one of Sweden's most extensive, with bottles from near and far, some sensibly priced and others among the most sought after. In summer a bistro operates in the herb garden. Afternoon Tea and a Christmas julbord are also on the calendar.
The hotel has operated since 1972, and its story goes back further than that. Karin and Ove Fransson built the restaurant's reputation in the 1990s, and Michelin lists it as Recommended for 2026. Guest rooms mix comfort and elegance, with organic and luxury amenities, tailored bedding and skincare. Suites offer more space for longer stays.
