The story
Cal Paradís, in Cabanes, is a contemporary Mediterranean restaurant at Avenida Vilafranca 30, Vall d'Alba, and holds one Michelin star (2026). The Mediterranean kitchen is built around local produce from the interior of Castellón.
Miguel Barrera leads the kitchen, with Ángela working alongside him. His parents opened El Paradís in Vall d'Alba in 1973, and that family restaurant shaped his approach. The cooking draws on traditional recipes, reworked with modern technique.
Heirloom varieties such as judía "roget" and "tomaca de penjar" appear in the cooking. Wild boletus and Valencian truffle come from the woods near Penyagolosa and the Maestrazgo sierras. Part of the produce grows in the restaurant's own garden, watered with water from the Cenia.
The Plana de l'Arc menu, inspired by traditional regional flavours, can be ordered in a vegetarian version made with seasonal ingredients. A Gastromercat menu and a Miguel Barrera menu are also offered. The restaurant holds a 4 Radishes rating in the We're Smart Green Guide (2026), and it has a Repsol certificate for efficient, sustainable cooking. Solar panels on the roof help cut energy use.
