The story
FYN is a contemporary South African restaurant at 37 Parliament Street, Cape Town City Centre, placed 37th in The World's 50 Best Restaurants in 2022. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner on the fifth floor of Speakers Corner, with tasting menus that move through the Cape's land and sea.
Peter Tempelhoff founded FYN and leads the kitchen with culinary director Ashley Moss. The name comes from fynbos, the biodiverse plant kingdom of the Cape region. The cooking borrows the seasonal, restrained approach of Japanese cuisine and applies it to South African produce, so each ingredient keeps its own character.
Courses are grouped by place: Cape Point tuna finned tail to tail, kelp and abalone from the sea plants, springbok and ostrich from the wild game, KZN langoustine from the Warm Agulhas Current, and Karoo lamb with buchu from the Cape farms. Plant-based and pescatarian versions of the menu run alongside it, and the Burnt Mushroom Custard appears across the menus as a signature.
The dining room sits above the city centre and balances dark and light, with a space that feels both expansive and intimate. Jennifer Hugé leads wine and service as sommelier and service director. The restaurant also holds 5 Radishes in the 2026 We're Smart Green Guide.
