The story
Joontos, the restaurant at Dar Tantora in AlUla, serves Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking at 375 AlUla Old Town, 43562 AlUla. Michelin awarded it a Bib Gourmand in 2026 for good quality, good value cooking.
The restaurant is led by Spanish chef Jaume Puigdengolas, who builds the menu around local ingredients. Gault&Millau singled out the beef sambusas, with paprika, red onion and a lemon cinnamon sauce. Its lamb carpaccio, thinly sliced, pairs meat and dates with tamarind and crisp mesclun. The margoog is slow-cooked with vegetables, and the date, cardamom and citrus dessert is soft and indulgent.
The dining room sits inside the old-town fortress of Dar Tantora and is lit mostly by candlelight. Antique wooden doors, carpets, furniture and murals give it a warm, understated character. Guests who prefer to stay in can order Mirbad, the in-room dining service, which brings the kitchen's dishes on locally sourced clay platters.
