The story
The Birdwood in Christchurch channels years of culinary experience into its Italian cooking. Nick Freeman brings a career that spanned London establishments like the Ritz and Cecconi’s Mayfair, while Sarah Freeman applies her background in education and youth support to the hospitality side. After running Freemans in Lyttelton through the seismic events of the 2010s, the couple purchased a former print shop in Beckenham and opened these doors in April 2018. Their three children join them daily, keeping the operation grounded in family routine.
The kitchen treats every dish as a deliberate statement rather than a passing trend. Dough for the pizzas uses Italian OO flour, water, salt, and fresh yeast, then stretches across durum wheat semolina before hitting a stone oven set to 350 degrees. Pastas range from pumpkin ravioli finished with toasted almonds and sage butter to casarecce tossed in a rich tomato base. Seasonal vegetables and locally sourced mushrooms appear alongside slow cooked venison gnocchi and pressed lamb shoulder.
The dining room functions as a relaxed neighbourhood hub where families gather for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Warm lighting and sturdy furniture create a cosy environment that encourages conversation without demanding formality. Weekend service expands to include massive Sunday pub meals featuring the classic pizza menu alongside generous portions of comforting sides. This steady flow of regulars helped the venue secure a Destination recognition from the Cuisine Good Food Guide, cementing its reputation as a reliable Italian spot in the suburbs.
