The story
Broederenklooster sits at Rozengracht 3 in Zutphen, where chef Niels van Dooijeweert runs a modern French kitchen inside a former monastery. Gault&Millau gave the restaurant a score of 15 in its 2026 guide.
Niels van Dooijeweert builds his menu on classical French technique with modern methods. The kitchen bakes its own bread, and fish and meat arrive whole so each product is handled with care from start to finish. Reviewers have singled out pan-fried goose liver with macadamia crumble, pineapple and fennel jus, and a loin of cod in beurre blanc with rhubarb. The open kitchen lets guests watch the brigade at work.
The building dates back to around 1200, and the guest rooms occupy the former 13th-century dormitory. The dining room is the old refectory, the monks' dining hall, where historical details have been kept. Large windows look over the cloister and the herb garden. Hostess Marieke Löhr leads the service team, and guests often mention the attentive, relaxed pace of the evening.
