The story
Restaurant Smink is a modern French restaurant at Van Harenstraat 37 in Wolvega, and it holds one Michelin star (2026). Jan Smink cooks, his wife Anne runs the room, and since 2025 they have done both from Huize Lindenoord, a 17th-century national monument.
Jan Smink grew up on a Frisian farm, and the produce reflects it. Reviewers point to Frisian Black Angus, meat from Dutch dairy cows, and fish and shellfish from the Wadden Sea. His French kitchen is classical in structure, with Frisian and Asian flavors running through it. He cooks in the open, and he has worked as a freelance chef for De Librije since 2013.
Sea bass with mandarin, yuzu and shiso is served by Jan himself, who explains the preparation as he goes. Pan-seared plaice comes with a parmesan-tomato crust, yuzu foam and veal jus. Earlier Lekker500 reviews single out ray wing with horseradish, dill and caviar. Lekker500 placed Smink at number 39 in 2026.
Dinner is a surprise menu of four to eight courses, while lunch runs from three to six. There is now an à-la-carte option too, and the two can be combined. Sommelier Ingeborg Gruter chooses the wines. Upstairs, "Smink op Zoolder" runs as a more relaxed BoerenBistro with its own menu.
