The story
Valuas, at St. Urbanusweg 11, 5914 CA Venlo, is a modern French restaurant and boutique hotel on the Meuse, listed as Recommended by Michelin in 2026.
Eric Swaghoven, an SVH Master Chef and the owner, has run Valuas since 1992. His modern French cooking takes in international influences and regional produce. The restaurant describes it as craft joined to new techniques, with forgotten traditions brought back to the table. The brasserie La Vie, under the same roof, handles daytime coffee, pastry and lunch.
At a 2026 lunch reviewed by Lekker500, which ranked Valuas 62nd that year, a mosaic of lobster, duck liver and sea bass opened the meal. Next came cannelloni of slow-cooked lamb shank with pistachio and apricot. A canelé de Bordeaux with several textures of vanilla followed, then a cheese trolley. Earlier reviews mention beef stroganoff finished tableside and sole meunière.
The dining room is classically furnished, with linen-draped tables and antique cabinets. Reviewers describe it as relaxed rather than stiff. Aperitifs are served in a lounge facing the river, and the rear terrace looks over the Meuse, with the Pieterpad trail passing by. A 2021 review counted more than 450 wine labels, several of them imported by the house.
