The story
’t Kalkoentje in Veenendaal is a French restaurant at Utrechtsestraatweg 143, set in a thatched farmhouse on the Lower Rhine. Gault&Millau awarded it 13.5 points in 2026, and the French kitchen has been run by the Klaver family for more than 35 years.
Chef Casper Klaver works alongside his father Nico, who has cooked here for over three decades. The menu runs four to six courses and follows the seasons, with local and organic produce where possible. Dishes change often, so the printed list may not match what arrives at the table.
Soft-shell crab comes tempura-fried with a tom kha foam over pearl couscous. Reviewers have praised the roe deer, which comes from the Plantage Willem III nature reserve, a short drive away. The signature vanilla soufflé is served with mango ice cream, and it remains the classic that regulars return for.
In summer the terrace looks out over the Lower Rhine, and a large tent now covers it so guests can dine outside for most of the season. In winter an open fireplace warms the interior, where tables are laid with white linen and silver. A tea arrangement with around 60 varieties is offered as an alcohol-free alternative to the wine pairings.
