The story
Héron Petit Restaurant is a French and international kitchen at Schalkwijkstraat 28 in Utrecht, and Michelin gave it a Bib Gourmand in 2026. Nearly everything on the plate comes from Dutch soil and water.
Owners Joyce Bielderman and Victor Stukker named the restaurant after the heron, a bird that fishes its meal from the wild. The kitchen works the same way, taking produce from farmers, growers and fishermen, plus plants foraged around Utrecht and at the Haarzuilens food forest. Much of it is fermented, pickled or dried for later, so asparagus can appear in winter. Chef Josephien Blom has worked at Choux, Mos and De Treeswijkhoeve.
The menu is in Dutch and reads as short lists of ingredients. Recent lines include wild Wadden oyster with angelica root oil and fennel, pied de cochon with remoulade and pickles, and sheep rack with lamb kidney and egusi. Dessert might be hay parfait with elderflower meringue and boterkoek. Three courses cost 52 euros, five cost 66. Lekker500 put Héron in its Top 500 in 2026, and its reviewer ended the night on an éclair with caramelized walnut cream and a ganache touched with pig's blood.
The room is simple, with plenty of wood and natural tones. Guests can sit at the open kitchen and watch the plates come together. Joyce mixes the non-alcoholic pairings herself from infusions, fruit, syrups, herbs and ferments, at 6.5 euros a glass. The wine list stays European, with matching glasses at 8.5.
