The story
Bovenmeester, at Woldpoort 57 in Steenwijk, serves modern French cooking in a former school building and holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand (2026) for good food at a fair price.
Chef Raymond Hengeveld works in a classic French style with contemporary techniques, and the emphasis stays on clean, pure flavours. The kitchen offers a chef's menu of three to seven courses, and guests choose meat, fish or vegetarian for each course. Gault&Millau scores the restaurant 12.5 for a classic kitchen that draws on regional produce.
Recent reviews single out a langoustine bisque, a duck liver and veal cheek terrine, and tournedos cooked to order, with duck liver available as an extra. The parmesan fries with garlic mayonnaise have become a fixture on the table. Wines can be ordered by the half glass, and mocktails are also offered. Reviewers have noted that the pacing between courses could be tighter.
The building dates from 1921 and sits at the edge of Steenwijk's historic centre. Chalkboards and wall paintings echo the old school primers, and the lamp shades carry the same playful lettering. The terrace suits a lunch or an early dinner in good weather. A meeting room above the restaurant can also be booked with a culinary arrangement.
