The story

Diepnoord Rotterdam: French Bistro in Oude Noorden, Gault&Millau 14 Points

Diepnoord is a French bistro at Bergweg 80 in Rotterdam's Oude Noorden district, and Gault&Millau awarded it 14 points in 2026. It sits on the corner of Bergweg and Soetendaalseweg, a busy spot that draws both young and older guests.

Shared plates from the stove

Rokus de Jong runs the kitchen, and the menu is built to be shared. Dishes arrive in a randomized order, moving from cold to warm. One standout is steak tartare with bottarga, a 62-degree egg yolk and thin sourdough crackers. Flat green beans and sea vegetables, dressed lightly and arranged like a nest, come with guanciale and a foamy citrus sauce.

A bistro room with a lively noise level

The room has the feel of an old French neighborhood bistro, with a long bar, wooden tables and linen napkins. It fills quickly, and the acoustics are loud, which reviewers mention often. The wine list is short and focused on natural and biodynamic bottles, available by the glass or bottle. Diepnoord also hosts a jazz evening once a month.

Diepnoord is a spacious, vibrant neighborhood bistro in Rotterdam's Oude Noorden district. A Parisian-style grand café where you can enjoy excellent food at simple wooden tables and chairs in an informal atmosphere. Behind the stove stands chef Rokus de Jong, who has curated a menu of creative, original, and thoughtfully crafted dishes designed for guests to share. It is busy and cozy, filled with many young guests and plenty of chatter. The acoustics aren't outstanding, but that shouldn't dampen the mood. The service is young, attentive, friendly, and well-informed. All the biodynamic and natural wines on the limited wine list are available by the bottle or glass. The starter features super-fresh hamachi served in a fermented juice of green tomato and mild jalapeño. This is followed by green asparagus with a panko-fried egg and creamy sesame sauce, alongside miso-cooked spinach. The al dente pappardelle with crab and a robust bisque is a standout dish, although the crab is rather sparingly featured. To finish, sweet-and-sour rhubarb with a yogurt-almond cream and a white chocolate crisp that, unfortunately, isn't particularly crunchy. Diepnoord isn't exactly a restaurant for lingering over a long evening, but if you're looking for a quicker dining date and want to be assured of a solid kitchen and reasonable prices, you've come to the right place.

Located in Rotterdam’s Oude Noorden district. Rokus de Jong, who honed his skills at restaurants including Renilde—where his brother Jim holds the culinary reins—stands behind the stove, while Sam Hoffstaetter runs the bar-bistro. We dive right in. Here, the cooking is executed with incredible beauty and surprising flair. The menu features selections the size of an appetizer that you either finish off yourself or share with your dining companions. They progress from cold to warm and are served in a randomized order. The wine list offers a modest selection of (natural) wines, but when we want to order a rosé—only one of which appears on the main list—a separate little sheet suddenly pops up featuring additional rosé labels. We choose an unfamiliar Pays d’Oc Val de Cesse rosé called Soit, beautifully floral with just a touch of richness. The dining room has the feel of an old French neighborhood bistro, filled with a long bar, wooden tables set with crisp linen napkins, chairs, and a wooden floor. It fills up quickly with predominantly young guests, and not without reason, as the menu prices are highly attractive. The downside is the acoustics. They are terrible, and something should be done about it. That doesn't take away from the fact that every dish is top-notch, and in that case, you're happy to put up with some noise. The crispy sourdough bread comes from Meneer Leffens and is served with whipped butter. We savor the sea bass and oyster tartare topped with paper-thin slices of kohlrabi in a lightly tangy rhubarb dressing. And the expertly prepared steak tartare with bottarga, a 62-degree egg yolk, and paper-thin sourdough crackers. The standout dish is a preparation of flat green beans and sea vegetables, lightly dressed and arranged on the plate like a little nest, accompanied by cubes of tender, rich guanciale (Italian cured pork cheek), drizzled with a foamy citrus sauce. All presented by a cheerful and relaxed kitchen brigade. Welcome to Lekker!
