The story
Au Coin des Bons Enfants, at Ezelmarkt 4 in Maastricht, holds one Michelin star (2026) for a classic French kitchen with a light Mediterranean accent. Chef Timo Reichelt and sommelier Lino de Vrede own the place together.
Reichelt started at 15 in the Michelin-starred Im Schiffchen in Düsseldorf. Later stints took him through Italy, Spain and Portugal before Maastricht. He and de Vrede bought the historic restaurant, and the star came within twelve months. His approach is to leave good ingredients largely as they are, with a modern French twist on the classics.
Balfegó bluefin tuna appears on several menus, paired with lychee and hazelnut or with blood orange and a Pedro Ximénez cream. A signature turbot, line-caught and roasted, comes on creamy sauerkraut with a beurre blanc made from Eiswein. The Rossini tartare adds foie gras mousse and Périgord truffle to beef tenderloin. Cheese comes from Joost of the Cheese Atelier. A vegetarian menu is offered, but vegan is not possible.
The building in the Jekerkwartier began as a nineteenth-century café. Today it has an anthracite stone floor, modern art and an open fireplace, which Gault&Millau (15 points, 2026) singles out as a reason to linger. In summer the patio sits under a grapevine. De Vrede pours only Old World wines, including older vintages, and Pinot Noir is his personal favourite.
