The story
Restaurant Atelier is at Markt 9 in Gulpen, Limburg, where chef Hans Kinkartz and hostess-sommelier Ellen Kinkartz run a French kitchen in a former tailor's workshop. The restaurant holds one Michelin star (2026), and its open kitchen and seasonal menus make it one of the region's most closely watched tables.
Hans Kinkartz builds his menus on a French foundation and adds global influences, which gives the cooking a modern and classic character at once. Foie gras with pineapple, rum and miso has been a long-standing classic on the carte. Gault&Millau gave the kitchen 16.5 points in 2026.
The restaurant occupies a 17th-century half-timbered house. One dining room has exposed wooden beams, the other a more industrial look with a living green wall. The open kitchen sits on the first floor, and Ellen Kinkartz leads the front of house with a relaxed, personal touch for the roughly 30 guests the room seats.
Guests choose a five- to eight-course signature menu, or a vegetarian version, and can add a wine pairing or a non-alcoholic pairing. Most wines are organic or biodynamic, and some are bottled for the house by Domaine Holset. Veganism is not possible for organisational reasons, but vegetarian dishes pose no problem.
