The story
Joann, at Nijverheidstraat 2 in Enschede, Netherlands, is a modern cuisine restaurant that earned one Michelin star in 2026. The dining room sits in a former manufacturer's villa on the edge of the city centre, and the menu changes with the seasons.
Owner-chef Emiel Kwekkeboom builds each evening around pure flavours, simplicity and quality. French and Japanese seasonings appear often on the plates. Ingredients follow the season, supply and availability. The vegetarian Royal Green menu draws on produce from the Enschede Groeituin.
The original monumental features of the building remain intact. The open kitchen is visible from the dining room, so guests can watch the team at work. Groups of 10 to 15 can book the Piano Room privately, with a minimum six-course dinner. Sommelier René Dommerholt selects the wines, which include lesser-known regions alongside classic labels.
